Copy Editing, Proofreading, And Blogging For Ocean Blue Project

Ocean Blue Project is an ocean cleanup non-profit organization. I joined their team as an editor for their blog and help them proofread their blogs and write articles from time to time.

Because they’re a non-profit organization, most of their writers are pro-bono and have little experience writing. As an editor, I help proof and edit each blog. I ensure they’re relevant, high-quality, and easy to read. I also double-check sources, optimize content for SEO, and offer writing suggestions.

The main goals to achieve with the blogs are:

  • Grow awareness about their organization and impact

  • Boost their rankings on Google

  • Prompt people to organize cleanups in their communities

  • Grow their organic traffic

  • Educate people on the issues the ocean is facing

Since the beginning of our work relationship in September 2020, this is how much organic growth they’ve seen:

OBP Traffic.png

The organic traffic went from 6,340 to 40,651 in 5 months, increasing more than 6x. This required a big team effort. There are two editors (including myself) and many writers making this possible. We were posting 3-4 blogs a week to achieve this kind of growth. The consistency and quality of the blogs helped boost the organic traffic.

The growth trend has continued over time, reaching 340,000 monthly visitors.

From 2020 to 2023, the organic traffic grew from about 6,000 monthly visitors to 340,000+ each month.

Some of the top pages driving organic traffic are blogs:

One of the blogs I wrote for Ocean Blue Project, “What are Nurdles”, is driving 1,600+ new visitors to their site every month. It’s also ranking third place in driving organic traffic to OBP. With an SEO difficulty of 70+ (on a scale of 1-100), this blog ranks first place on Google.

With these amazing results, all goals were achieved and organic traffic keeps on growing for Ocean’s Blue Project website!
